The trade-offs between freedom of choice, speech, and political expression on the one side and societal welfare on the other continue to pose challenges for policy makers trying to regulate digital platforms. At this workshop, we focus on recent advances in research on design, regulation, and benefits of digital platforms for users as well as their societal consequences. The scope of the workshop includes a variety of platforms, such as social media, streaming services, dating apps, digital marketplaces, and AI-powered tools. We aim to contribute to the policy debate in multiple contexts with a particular focus on interactions between digital platforms regulation and politics. We also aim to contribute to development of research methodology to study digital platforms, particularly, the role of AI tools.
Keynote Speakers: Elliott Ash (ETH Zurich) and Ruben Enikolopov (Universitat Pompeu Fabra)
